Pink Lemon?
Blue Ice Cream? Green Bear? Blue Cactus? Red Panda?
During the past two weeks in art, 1st grade has been working on some very interesting drawings... with unusual color choices. We read Pink Lemon, by Herve Tullet, a creative and colorful book full of objects, animals, and foods that are NOT shown in their usual colors.

As we looked at each page, the students enjoyed using their imaginations to figure out things like why clouds would be brown, what the world would look like if the sun were green, and what an apple would taste like if it were grey. Such a great way to stretch our imaginations! After reading the book, students chose an animal, object, or food and drew it large with black crayon. Then, they used oil pastels to color their drawing in an unusual way.
Grey Flowers? Rainbow Scissors? Pink Cat?

What a great way to get the kids away to the literalism many of them cling to and introduce them to the language of symbolism, figuration and abstraction. I always love it when I meet a boy(or girl) who is determined to paint their giraffe with blue and orange instead of brown and yellow!

Oops, I meant to say away from literalism. That's what I get for trying to use the big words-type-o's!

Thanks y'all! This has definately been a unit the students and I have really enjoyed. They are amazed and excited to realize that they don't have to use the usual colors of their subject matter, and they love showing off their creativity to one another!
